“Electrification” is a way to transition from gas, heating oil, or outdated appliances and equipment to high-efficiency electrified alternatives. The Electrify the Triad program will feature a free new online marketplace — LetsGoElectric.com — in which Triad area contractors showcase innovative heat pump technologies and energy-efficiency products and systems as well as electrical upgrades for purchase and installation in area homes.
Electrify the Triad was created to help inspire homeowners to improve their home’s energy efficiency, take energy conservation actions and improve indoor air quality. Ultimately, the program seeks to make electrification—and the savings, safety and improved comfort it can bring—easier and more accessible to everyone.
Launched via the vision and energy of a unique combination of community partner organizations, the program follows in the footsteps of the region’s recently successful Solarize the Triad campaign. This initiative resulted in 784.59 kW of solar energy and 1,009.7 kWh of battery storage added to the grid, and an annual reduction of 1,683,142 lbs of CO2 emissions.
Organizations involved in Electrify the Triad include The City of Winston-Salem, Piedmont Environmental Alliance, Piedmont Triad Regional Council, North Carolina League of Conservation Voters Foundation, Goler Community Development, Grind Vine Consulting, Ardmore United Methodist Church, Forsyth Audubon, Citizen's Climate Lobby, Piedmont Federal Bank, Clean Energy Fund of the Carolinas and Let's Go Electric.
“For many households, high utility bills can be just as challenging as high rent,” said Dr. Shaleen Miller, Sustainability Director for the City of Winston-Salem. “By upgrading buildings and electrifying systems, we not only reduce energy waste, we put real, month-to-month savings back in the pockets of Winston-Salem families.”
Replacing aging or outdated equipment with heat pumps is one of the most efficient, high-impact ways to improve indoor air quality and comfort plus often lower household energy costs. Heat pumps and other new technologies provide efficient and eco-friendly alternatives for a more sustainable, healthier and comfortable home.
Electrify the Triad is connected to a national movement to electrify the built environment.
Positively impacting climate change requires a transition from fossil fuels to renewable electricity sources and converting appliances and vehicles to run on clean electricity, according to Rewiring America, a national nonprofit organization focused on the value of electrification.
City residents can “take a pledge” now to get a headstart on arrival of the program and to receive the latest updates on the availability of Electrify the Triad’s features. To pledge and sign up – which has no obligation – visit Piedmont Environmental Alliance.
To activate the local effort, a special one-of-a-kind “electrify” marketplace – LetsGoElectric.com – provides tools to map and begin taking climate-positive actions in homes.
